How to apply

Please read the following instructions carefully.

Eligibility criteria

Any research laboratory in the Île-de-France region can apply with a project on synthetic biology. The DIM will only fund collaboration between two academic research laboratories, one of which is the leader; an industrial partner can participate in the project but will not be funded under this call. The lead laboratory will be the project coordinator. A researcher can only participate in one project under this call, either as a leader or as a collaborator.

Synthetic Biology is an interdisciplinary branch of biology which applies formal engineering principles to living systems in order to develop new biological systems, from the molecular to the multicellular level, for useful purposes. This call will only finance synthetic biology projects with possible application in the health sciences field.

Aims

The aim of this call is to promote new collaborations or reinforce current ones on synthetic biology focusing on:

    • Life sciences engineering and bioproduction
    • Development of therapeutics proofs-of-principles
    • New, high throughput, standardisable analythic methods
    • Digital or AI tools to improve data analysis or modelling in quality control and production methods
    • Guarantee an inclusive, responsible, sustainable Bioconvergence

Fellowship details

The call will finance three postdoctoral grants equivalent to €55,000/year over a maximum period of two years, as well as an additional complementary envelope of €25,000 per year (to be detailed in the project submission file) , for a total of €160,000 per allocation.

The call laureates agree to use part of the complementary envelope in internship salaries for at least 1 intern per year. Note that the internship offer must appear on the Ile-de-France Region website according to the terms that will be communicated by the managers of the DIM BioConvS.

The candidate must be identified no later than September 30, 2023 in order to ensure that the contract will officially begin no later than December 31, 2023.

Application process

The application form, as well as the project presentation document, are to be downloaded from the platform in a Word format; you can find the template on the left of this page (under the menu Navigation > Templates to download). Please only use the downloadable templates (.docx files) to apply.

1. Online pre-proposal (deadline March 13, 2023). The primary laboratory must submit the following documents:

  • Mandatory application form (includes general information, project summary), from the template available (do not modify the structure of the template). Accepted file type: .docx
  • Description of the project (according to the model available). Accepted file type: .docx
  • For the two principal researchers, CVs of 2 pages, highlighting the 5 most significant publications. Type of files accepted: .pdf
  • If available, CV of the identified postdoc candidate. File type accepted: .pdf

Please note: The summary, the questionnaire and possibly the description of the project will be shared with the DIM community for comments, suggestions and exchanges with the applicants, with the aim of further improving the project. These exchanges are protected by a confidentiality agreement.

2. The pre-evaluation period ends (March 27, 2023). Where necessary, we will provide you with written comments by e-mail so that you can modify the submitted project.

3. Final closing of the AAP (April 5, 2023) with submission of the project in its final version taking into account the comments and suggestions made by the community.

4. Evaluation: Applications will be evaluated by experts from the DIM panel and proposed reviewers, based on the following criteria: (i) previous scientific achievements (20%), (ii) scientific quality of the project (55%), ( iii) adequacy with the field of synthetic biology (25%).

5. The final selection (May 31, 2023) will be made by the DIM's scientific committee and approved by its board of directors.
